Best Day and Time to Apply for a Job

Best Day and Time to Apply for a Job

If your job application is ready on Friday night, send it. We don't recommend holding a finished application for Monday or Tuesday just to hit a supposedly better time.

Wait when you need something specific before submitting, such as an employee referral link. Otherwise, submit when your application is ready and the employer is accepting it, including at night or over the weekend.

Is Monday or Tuesday the best day to apply for a job?

We wouldn't choose either as a rule for your search. To recommend one, we'd want evidence that comparable applicants to comparable openings had better interview outcomes on that day.

A chart showing the busiest application day doesn't establish that. More applications can produce more interviews without improving any individual applicant's odds. An employer's busiest day for sending offers also tells you little about when those candidates applied.

Will a weekend or late-night application get buried?

Submitting at 9 a.m. doesn't guarantee you'll be first on a recruiter's screen. Published hiring workflows show why:

  • Reviewers can reverse the order. Gem's application review controls let recruiters sort applications from oldest to newest or newest to oldest. The same submission time puts you in a different position depending on that choice.

  • Referrals can be reviewed first. Greenhouse's priority review feature lets recruiters begin with groups such as employee referrals and internal applicants.

  • Review may start after the deadline. Under Winthrop University's staff hiring process, HR reviews applications after a posting closes, then refers people who meet the minimum requirements to the hiring supervisor.

These examples don't prove weekdays have no effect on interview odds. They show why you can't infer your place in the queue from the time you hit Submit.

If you already applied on Sunday, leave the application in place. Don't withdraw and resubmit just to change the weekday. Follow the employer's instructions if you need to correct or update it.

When does application timing matter?

An employee has offered a referral. Ask how their company's process works before submitting. You can send:

Thanks for offering to refer me. Should I wait for a referral link, or apply directly and send you the job ID? The posting closes [date and time zone].

A short wait makes sense if you need that link and can still meet the deadline. If the deadline is approaching and the referral hasn't arrived, ask whether you should apply directly. Don't miss the application window while waiting for an answer.

You're also planning to email a recruiter. You can submit through the portal on Sunday evening and schedule a separate introduction for Monday during the recruiter's local business hours. That is a courtesy, not a measured interview advantage. You don't need to delay both.

If email is the application method specified in the posting, the email itself must arrive before the deadline. If a recruiter has already given you a timeline, follow it.

The closing time uses a different time zone. The Defense Intelligence Agency's application instructions, for example, require the application and supporting documents by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on the closing date unless the announcement says otherwise. That is 8:59 p.m. in California, not local midnight. This is one agency's rule; check the employer's stated deadline and time zone instead of assuming every portal works the same way.

For referrals and separate emails, use LifeShack's free job application tracker to record the contact and next action. Mark a submitted application as Applied, then put the planned outreach date in Next Follow-Up.

Keep applications moving when you're busy

If suitable jobs are sitting in your saved list because you don't have another evening for forms, LifeShack can help with that work. It finds roles matching your preferences, prepares and submits supported applications, and records the results in your dashboard.

Set your profile and job preferences before enabling it. Auto Apply doesn't ask you to approve each application before submission. Put companies where you're arranging a referral on your blocklist and handle those applications manually. Check the dashboard for completed submissions.
